Whether you're hosting family for a long weekend or planning a holiday work brunch, a big breakfast with a special recipe is perfect. This sausage strata is a delicious casserole-like meal with eggs, sausage, bread, and cheese.
16 ounces sausage
¼ cup shallots, chopped
10 eggs
4 cups whole milk
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
1 cup cheddar cheese, grated
1 tablespoon dried parsley
6 cups cubed Italian or French bread
Ingredient
Direction
Set aside a lightly greased 9x13 pan. In a large skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until no longer pink. Leave the grease in the pan and remove the sausage to a plate.
1
Add chopped shallots to skillet with remaining grease. Slowly cook until golden, about 5 minutes.
2
Place shallots on sausage plate and set aside. Mix eggs, milk, mustard, salt, and pepper in a large bowl.
3
Add Gruyère, cheddar, parsley, sausage, and shallots and mix well.
4
Add the cubed bread to the bowl and gently mix until coated in egg mixture.
5
Fill the pan and foil it. Keep refrigerated for 8–24 hours. Heat the oven to 350 F.
6
Baking the strata for 50-60 minutes will make the center set and golden. Wait 10 minutes after removing from the oven before cutting and serving.
